How does saliva protect your teeth?
Saliva neutralises the acids that cause decay, rinses away food and bacteria, and carries the calcium and phosphate that repair early enamel damage. When saliva drops, cavity risk climbs sharply.

Why does saliva matter so much?
Most people think about oral health in terms of brushing, flossing and avoiding sugar. Saliva does a great deal of the work alongside all three, continuously, without anyone noticing.
It is not glamorous, but it is one of the strongest natural defences you have against decay.
Saliva neutralises acid
Every time you eat or drink something sugary or starchy, the bacteria in your mouth produce acid. That acid is what attacks enamel and starts a cavity.
Saliva dilutes it, raises the pH back to a safe level, and stops enamel dissolving. Without that buffering, acid would sit against the teeth far longer and cavities would form considerably faster.
Saliva washes away food and bacteria
Think of it as the mouth's rinse cycle. It clears food particles, reduces harmful bacteria, and makes it harder for plaque to stick — which means less fuel for the bacteria that cause decay.
Saliva repairs early damage
Enamel is constantly losing and regaining minerals. Saliva carries the calcium and phosphate teeth need, plus fluoride when you use a fluoride toothpaste.
After an acid attack, saliva returns those minerals to the enamel. This repairs early damage before it becomes a cavity — which is the whole basis of catching decay early rather than drilling it.
Why does low saliva flow raise cavity risk?
When the mouth becomes dry — a condition called xerostomia — every one of those protections weakens at once. Common causes include:
- Certain medications, including antidepressants, antihistamines and blood pressure medication
- Stress or anxiety
- Autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren's syndrome
- Dehydration
- Smoking or vaping
- Radiation therapy
- Ageing
The effects compound. Acids stay longer, debris is not washed away, teeth cannot remineralise, bacteria multiply faster and plaque gets stickier — which is why people with chronic dry mouth can develop several new cavities within months, sometimes on smooth surfaces that are normally low risk.
What helps?
Some of this is simple; some is worth a conversation at your next visit.
- Stay hydrated — small sips through the day rather than large amounts occasionally
- Chew sugar-free gum, preferably containing xylitol
- Use alcohol-free mouthwash — alcohol dries the mouth further
- Use fluoride toothpaste, and ask about fluoride varnish
- Limit sugary snacks, particularly between meals
- Ask about saliva substitutes, dry mouth gels, high-fluoride pastes and prescription rinses
When should you mention it?
If you often feel dry, wake with a sticky mouth, or find yourself sipping water constantly, say so at your next appointment. Managing dry mouth early prevents a run of problems later, and it is much easier to address before the cavities arrive than after.
