Why removing less matters
Every time a tooth is drilled, some of what is taken away never comes back. Standard practice has often been to remove generously — reshaping a tooth so a crown fits, or treating the nerve because the cavity looked deep.
Conservative dentistry starts from the opposite assumption: that natural tooth structure is worth preserving, and that the decision to remove it should be made carefully. Modern adhesive materials make it possible to rebuild a badly damaged tooth without reducing the healthy parts of it first.
The practical consequence is that treatments many patients assume are unavoidable — crowns, root canals, extractions — are sometimes avoidable. Not always. But often enough that it is worth asking before agreeing.
